ARLO ESSENTIAL SPOTLIGHT CAMERA REVIEW

PURPOSE OF BUYING

  • requires no SmartHub
  • extremely practical smart features
  • Easy to assemble and use
  • There are numerous customization options

REASONS TO AVOID

  • Still more expensive than some rivals
  • 1080p only
  • Spotlight's range is constrained.

We regularly list Arlo's smart wireless security cameras in our list of the best security cameras, but we do have a few reservations: earlier models were frequently more expensive and needed a separate hub in addition to your Wi-Fi router.

These restrictions are absent from the Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera, making it a more flexible and economical option. However, more affordable does imply a slightly inferior specification. Let's look at this smart camera's advantages and disadvantages.

The Essential is unique in that you can link to Arlo's SmartHub if you have one, but it is not necessary. Additionally, it works with IFTTT, Samsung SmartThings, Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and Alexa. However, there is no option to locally store video via microSD if the Essential is not connected to a SmartHub; only cloud storage is available.

The 1080p camera can see objects up to 300 feet away and has a 130º viewing angle, 12x digital zoom, and motion detection with a range of up to 23 feet and a 110º detection area.

The spotlight is incredibly bright, but due to its small size, it doesn't have a great deal of range. If you need a camera that can light up a broad area at night, one of Arlo's floodlight cameras may be a better alternative. Another standalone option is the Ring Floodlight Cam.

The Arlo Smart subscription that comes with the Essential is good for three months and includes 30 days of cloud storage, activity zones (so the camera can ignore things like passing traffic or your neighbor), and the ability to distinguish between people, pets, and parcels.
